Exceptional care begins with a strong foundation

Rural hospitals face a unique combination of staffing, financial, and operational pressures that can make it difficult to maintain consistent, high-quality emergency care. Recruiting and retaining experienced physicians and APPs remains an ongoing challenge, while rising costs, reimbursement pressures, and evolving healthcare policies place additional strain on already limited resources. At the same time, high turnover and low provider engagement can disrupt continuity of care, affect staff morale, all the while reducing overall department efficiency. Together, these challenges can place significant pressure on rural emergency departments and the communities that depend on them.

At Innova, we understand these challenges because we’ve seen them firsthand. For nearly twenty years, we’ve practiced in rural emergency departments alongside teams like yours, and we’ve developed a model designed to address many of the challenges we face together.

Strategies that maximize financial results while maintaining clinical excellence.

A 25-bed critical access hospital serving an extended rural community had been struggling with patient satisfaction, departmental reputation, and high left-without-being-seen rates during peak hours. In 2011, Innova took over emergency department physician staffing with the goal of improving quality and patient experience.

  • Low patient satisfaction scores
  • Poor departmental reputation
  • High left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rates, especially during peak hours

  • Isolate the reasons: Identified contributing factors, including low physician quality, poor patient communication, and inefficient patient flow.
  • Assess barriers: Addressed cultural and operational silos between physicians, nursing, and other service lines.
  • Evaluate options: Viewed the ED experience from the patient perspective — from door-to-triage, signage, and check-in to disposition.
  • Implement changes:
    • Invested in board-certified Emergency Medicine physicians
    • Incentivized provider ownership and accountability
    • Streamlined triage and ordering processes
    • Placed physician leadership on the ground to provide clinical care
